Are You Able to Solve It? That Forgotten Netherlands Creation That Shaped the Contemporary Globe
There are numerous contenders for the designation as “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that title belongs to the automated timber mill invented by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, building a simple trading ship necessitated around ten lumberjacks laboring for 90 days,” notes the author. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical saw, which converted logs to planks with almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build ships faster than any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch naval, financial and artistic supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The First True Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, was “mankind’s initial authentic factory machine.” A windmill turned a gear. One component transformed its circular motion into up-and-down motion to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed the spinning motion into a lateral movement feeding the timber to the blade. A ratchet system moved the log ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius was to integrate these parts so they acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending motion while moving with each upward stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent use of basic parts.”
Which brings us up to the current challenge. The task is for you to reimagine one of the fundamental concepts underpinning Corneliszoon’s machine.
Round and Up
Construct a mechanism that turns circular movement into up-and-down action. You have these components exclusively: A rotating disc. Two pegs. Two bars. A “sleeve”, which is a tube or housing through which a single the rods will fit snugly. (Assume it is possible to put things on a stand, so the parts do not fall down.)
The solution returns later today UK with the answer.
Meanwhile, NO SPOILERS. Instead, please propose (less celebrated) contenders as the planet’s most impactful invention.
